Building complete for new Youth Zone in Barnet
From sports in the four-court Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, Boxing room and on the rooftop 3G pitch to music, arts, employability and enterprise workshops, a giant climbing wall, a mentoring kitchen, hot meals for £1 and much more, young people will pay just £5 per year to be a member and 50p each time they visit.
The Youth Zone has been developed by the national charity OnSide Youth Zones, which has worked with Barnet Council as strategic partners.
Shocking statistics reveal diabetes risk facing people in Barnet
Barnet Council will host an all-day awareness-raising event to mark Diabetes Week in Brent Cross Shopping Centre from 9am to 8pm on Tuesday 11 June. At last year’s event, 23 people were shown to have Type 2 diabetes, while a further 20 discovered they were pre-diabetic and at significant risk of developing the condition. The figure accounts for nearly half of the shoppers tested during the day. Not one of them were aware of the condition they were facing or the potential health risks.
Contract realignment update

New leader of Barnet Council appointed
Councillor Thomas is taking over the leadership of the council from Councillor Richard Cornelius. Councillor Thomas has been Deputy Leader since 2011, as well as Chairman of the Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee, and is a ward councillor for Finchley Church End.
Councillor David Longstaff will serve as Deputy Leader to Councillor Thomas. Councillor Richard Cornelius will become Chair of the Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee.
55th Mayor of Barnet sworn into office
During her mayoral year Councillor Stock’s husband, Dr Richard Stock, will be the Mayor’s Consort and Councillor Lachhya Bahadur Gurung will be Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Stock takes over the chains of office from the borough’s previous Mayor, Councillor Reuben Thompstone for whom she also served as Deputy Mayor.
Born and raised in Barnet, Councillor Stock was first elected to Barnet Council in 2014 as ward member for Totteridge.
Mayor of Barnet congratulates Saracens on Champions Cup victory
The final was held at St James’ Park, Newcastle, and saw Saracens beat Leinster 20-10, despite being 10 points behind for nearly half of the game.
The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Reuben Thompstone, said: “I would like to congratulate Saracens on behalf of everyone at the council for winning the Champions Cup on Saturday.

I have lived in Barnet all my life, and I am extremely proud of all that has been achieved in the last eight years.
I have enjoyed the challenge of making the money go further. This has not always been easy and we have had to make some difficult decisions, but the borough is now in a better place. We kept general Council Tax frozen for 9 years until 2019, while resident satisfaction with the council has remained high.
Mayor of Barnet opens flagship scheme in Mill Hill
It is the first of three extra care developments to be built by the council to help residents of the borough live happily and stay independent for longer. Stag House in Burnt Oak will provide 50 new homes and Cheshir House in Hendon will provide 75 new homes. These, too, will be tailored specifically for the elderly, people suffering from dementia and those with extra care and support needs.
