Support and rewards for foster carers

Becoming a foster carer is one of the most significant decisions you can make. Foster care can hugely benefit the children and young people you may care for, and it will be very rewarding for you.

Barnet fostering works in partnership with local schools, health, voluntary and council services to ensure we offer the best all round support to our children and their carers.

We offer competitive fees and allowances along with great benefits and rewards, including general and bespoke training and development to help you be the best foster carer possible.

Payments and allowances

We’ll provide you with a skills based fee and maintenance for each child you foster.

Payments range from £330 to £581 per week, depending on your experience and training as a carer. 

We'll also provide extra payments for:

• birthdays for each child you care for
• holiday allowance for each child
• a family planned break each year
• religious festivals
• school uniform and emergency clothing 
• set up costs (including additional equipment need, like prams)
• transport and mileage costs

Support and training

Children in care do better and achieve more when in foster care. We’re here to help and support Barnet foster families by providing:

• a dedicated social worker who will visit regularly to offer individual support and guidance
• an out of hours support service for any emergencies
• an experienced foster carer buddy to lend a helping hand
• monthly local support groups hosted by Barnet Foster Carers Association (BAFCA), where you get advice in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere amongst friends and colleagues
• membership to the Fostering Network, a national charity offering free expert guidance, discounts, training and events
• access to Barnet’s virtual school for looked after children, providing online educational support
• partnership with the North London Fostering Consortium, along with 5 other North London borough councils, for additional resources, training and advice to foster carers
