The election process has got underway in traditional fashion in Barnet as the Mayor received the official writs from the Lord Chancellor.

With the country set to go to the polls on 4 July to choose their Members of Parliament, the receipt of the writs is a key part of the General Election timetable.

The official documents are issued after the dissolution of Parliament to each constituency calling for an election to take place.

Writs were delivered by Royal Mail to Barnet Council’s Colindale offices on Friday, 31 May for each of the borough’s parliamentary constituencies: Chipping Barnet, Finchley and Golders Green, and Hendon.

The Mayor holds the title of Returning Officer in parliamentary elections, although this is largely a ceremonial tradition allowing them to reserve the right to accept the writs and declare the results at the election count.

All other duties involved in administering the election are automatically delegated to the Acting Returning Officer.

The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Tony Vourou, said:

“I am pleased to receive the writs from the Lord Chancellor calling for elections to take place.

“This begins the countdown to voting in Chipping Barnet, Finchley and Golders Green, and Hendon constituencies in the upcoming General Election.”
