October is Black History Month and this year there are plenty of activities taking place in Barnet to mark and celebrate the month – all of which are virtual and free to join.
Black History Month events with Barnet Libraries
Barnet Libraries have lined up an exciting programme of events to mark Black History Month. They have also produced several recommended book lists to help you read something to mark the month.
Virtual Story Time: 'So Much' by Trish Cooke

STEM London Hub presents ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’

In this webinar, several fantastic STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professionals who have come from a range of STEM related backgrounds will discuss their experiences and share advice they have learnt along the way as Black professionals. Hoping to inspire students, teachers, and parents with their insight and shared experiences.

RAF Museum: Black Britain in Wartime

The RAF Museum's Black History Month event is a virtual event featuring an esteemed panel of speakers. Each speaker will present details of their research followed by a discussion and interactive Q&A session regarding the contribution and legacy of Black service personnel in the RAF during the Second World War.
The panel features:
- Maureen Dickson — author of Pilots and Soldiers of the Caribbean: Fighting Men of The Caribbean;
- Stephen Bourne — author of Under Fire: Black Britain in Wartime, 1939–1945;
- Russell Smith — a collaborative researcher with the RAF Museum;
- David Hallam — a local historian in Smethwick, West Midlands, and former Member of the European Parliament, who is currently researching Tony O'Connor (who served in the RAF and later became Britain's first Black headteacher).
‘An evening making heroes’ - online art workshop

Who is your hero? What do they mean to you? How do you see them? How do they shine? This is a creative community workshop by Figuration, a creative social enterprise, for Black History Month 2020 and in partnership with Barnet Libraries.

Virtual walking tour of Georgian London with Dominic Burris North

Dominic is an official blue badge London tour guide and will take you on a virtual tour through Georgian London. He will be sharing stories of Black people who lived or passed through the city during the Georgian period, including freedom fighters, a poet, shopkeepers, veterans and an heiress.
