Cycleways with continuous footways - safety outcomes
Received: 9 June 2025
Following a doubling of the number of collisions involving serious injury to cyclists for the cycleway on the Ewell Road in Kingston I am researching the safety outcomes of cycleway schemes using continuous footways. London Cycling Design Standards Chapter 3 section 3.5.3 pp 42-43, describes continuous footways in detail.I am requesting the following information about cycleway schemes involving continuous footways in your borough under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act or Environmental Information Regulations. *The location of the scheme in terms of the name of the principal road affected, e.g. Shaftsbury Avenue (London Borough of Camden), Ewell Road (Royal Borough of Kingston) etc.*The geospatial coordinates for the start and end for the continuous footway sections of schemes. If a section of the scheme covers more than one junction then I only need the start of the continuous section through to the end by major intersection. *The date the scheme was constructed.*The engineering diagrams showing junction layouts for the scheme as originally constructed.*The date of any updates to the scheme.*The engineering diagrams showing junction layouts for the scheme updates post original construction.*The details of the Experimental Traffic Order / Experimental Traffic Management Order / Experimental Traffic Regulation Order associated with the scheme.*If no ETO / ETMO / ETRO was put in place, details of why the scheme is not considered experimental including references to supporting research evidence stating why it was considered appropriate to implement without an ETO being in place.*Whether TfL funding was provided for the scheme (Y/N)?*The level of funding granted if Yes.*The date funding granted if Yes.*The Initial Costs of the Scheme.*The costs of any repairs to the continuous footways.*The costs of any reconstruction of the scheme's junctions and footways.*Whether additional signage and warning has been provided to road users traversing continuous footways.*Details of whether the on-ramps across the face of the Sideroad Raised Entry Treatment (SRET) associated with the continuous footway junction have sinusoidal or even gradient on-ramps. The face of the STRET being the entry to the sideroad from the main road.*Details of the accident / collision data provided to elected official and used in decisions made to make the Experimental Scheme permanent.*The date the scheme was made permanent.*Details of target accident / collision reductions for the experimental scheme section.*Detail of any other experimental criteria against which success or failure of the experimental scheme was measured.
