Freedom of Information Request

Anti-Poverty Stratergy

Received: 3 September 2024

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from London Borough of Barnet:1. Does your council have a written anti-poverty strategy (this may also be referred to as a 'poverty strategy')? This may be an all-age strategy, or one focussing on a specific group of the population, such as a child poverty strategy. If so, please provide a link to the strategy if it is available publicly, or a copy via email.2. If your council does not have an anti-poverty strategy in place, does it plan to develop one within the next 12 months? If so, please provide a link to any public facing document detailing this commitment.3. Has your council voluntarily adopted the socio-economic duty?ClarificationIn order for you to fulfil the FOI request, I can provide some clarity around the socio-economic duty and what this means. The socio-economic duty is contained within section 1 of the Equality Act 2010 and requires public authorities to consider the way their decisions impact people experiencing socio-economic disadvantage. However, that section of the Equality Act was never enacted into law, and instead it has been up to public bodies to voluntarily adopt the duty. The Labour Party committed in their manifesto to enacting the duty and therefore making it a legal requirement, much the same as existing equalities law, but this has not happened so far, since they took power in July. There are more details here if they're useful to you.
