Orthoptists specialise in treating squints and other associated vision problems. The aims of Orthoptic services are to provide a comprehensive Secondary Vision Screening Service for children up to the age of 16, a base for Primary Vision Screening, screening for specified special schools and to offer treatment and advice where applicable. A referral system operates and an appointment will be sent within two weeks of receipt of referral. The service aims to see all children referred in the appropriate clinic within 8 weeks. A diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan will be made where appropriate. A report of initial findings will be sent to the initial referrer with recommendations and updated reports will be sent if the treatment plan changes. On discharge the referring agency will receive a discharge summary letter.
