Report fly-tipping
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste. Fly-tipping can vary in scale significantly, from a bin bag of rubbish to larger quantities of waste dumped from trucks.
We'll take action against anyone found to be fly-tipping within Barnet under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for which there is an unlimited fine and possible imprisonment.
Fly tips on public land
If you are reporting a fly tip on public land, please provide:
- the exact location, including any additional information to help us find it, such as the closest door number or whether it is near a lamp post or litter bin
- the contents and size of it
- a photograph if it is safe to take one
- a description of persons and details of any vehicle involved if it is safe to obtain them

If you witness fly tipping
If you witness an incident of fly-tipping we advise you not to put yourselves at risk by challenging the offender. Do not approach the person.
Make a note of the vehicle registration number and the date and time of the incident and contact us with this information. We can then investigate.
Please make a note of the exact location. All fly-tipping reported on public land will be cleared.
Fly tips on private land
Fly tips on private land are the responsibility of the landowner or managing agent to arrange clearance. A fly tip could be on private land if it is in:
- someone’s garden
- a shop or supermarket frontage or car park, or
- a private alley way or service road.
Landowners or managing agents can arrange their own collection or book a bulky waste collection from the council. Residents can also take items to Summers Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre, depending on the type of waste.
Fly tips containing hazardous materials
If you are aware a fly tip contains hazardous substances or chemicals, it will need to be dealt with by a specialist.
