Why refurbishment equipment?

The UK is currently the second worst generator of e-waste per person in the world. Every year the UK wastes the equivalent of 2,500 double decker buses of e-waste.

There are many barriers to digital inclusion, including the cost of laptops and tablets. Essential services like banking, access to NHS, benefits and employment searches have moved online. This means anyone without access to a device could be hugely disadvantaged.

Refurbishing IT hardware can help to reduce the:

amount of e-waste which enters landfills
digital divide

Thanks to funding from Barnet Together, 2econd Chance have launched the Refurbished Laptop Scheme. This enables community organisations to refer individuals in need of a device.

The scheme is run by 2econd Chance.

2econd Chance supports digitally excluded and vulnerable Barnet residents. They donate laptops or tablets to support Barnet community organisations and residents in need of equipment.

Donating an unwanted laptop or tablet

Residents

You can drop off unwanted laptops or tablets that are less than 8 years old at any Barnet Library.

These will be collected by 2econd Chance who will refurbish the device and ensure that it goes to a digitally excluded Barnet resident.

2econd Chance can issue certification to give you peace of mind that your data has been completely erased.

Businesses and schools

Businesses and schools can contact 2econd Chance to donate laptops and tablets for refurbishment.

This provides an alternative to scrapping unwanted IT equipment and is also kinder to the planet.

Getting a refurbished laptop or tablet

Who can apply for free equipment

Community organisations can apply for laptops by completing the online application process.

If individual residents wish to apply for free equipment, you must first be referred from a Barnet community organisation.

Any resident can buy a laptop or tablet at affordable price, from the 2econd Chance ebay store

About 2econd Chance

2econd Chance C.I.C. is a not-for-profit computer recycling company, providing training for vulnerable people the furthest away from the job market.

They have 3 overarching aims:

1)   Reduce e-waste by encouraging people to recycle
2)   Support the widening digital divide by donating 25% of all machines received back into the community
3)   Providing work-based training for NEET adults and young people aged 16-25 with an Education Health Care plan.

Unwanted laptops and tablets that are up to 8 years old can be donated to 2econd Chance by schools, businesses and residents to be used to provide training. Laptop donation points are in all Barnet libraries.

Training

Trainees are referred to 2econd Chance by local organisations including DWP, Mencap, Langdon, Resources for Autism with 30 trainees visiting every week for training.

Every trainee learns how to:

wipe data
install Windows 10
partition disks
replace RAM and hard drives

Training is tailored to the needs and abilities of each learner. At the end of the training the learner should be ble to refurbish a computer independently.

Refurbished laptops and tablets are sold at an affordable price. Proceeds are then reinvested, with 1 in 4 being donated back into our community through partners.

Who do 2econd Chance support?

2econd Chance supports young people who are not engaged in education, employment or training who have an interest in IT.

They also support young people who may have an Education, Health, and Care (EHC) plan in place.
