Critical Drainage Area (CDA) projects
Skip to:
Where the projects will take place
We are working on these projects included in the national Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) programme:
- Muswell Hill Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
- Decoy Brook Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
- Mill Hill Circus Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
- Childs Hill Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
- Friern Barnet Critical Drainage Area CDA
Project stages
Any project in the FCERM programme has 3 key stages, these are:
- Initial Assessments
- Detailed Option Assessment
- Business Case
The business case will need to be approved by the Environment Agency.
If stakeholders agree, the scheme can go through to Detailed Design and Construction.
When the projects will be completed
We have identified our top 10 priority Critical Drainage Areas (CDAs) from the Barnet’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and included them in the national FCERM program.
The priority CDAs have finished the Initial Assessments stage.
As Barnet's Environment Committee Paper, June 2019 was approved, the following CDAs are currently in the Detailed Assessment stage:
Muswell Hill Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
A business case has been approved by Environment Agency for Muswell Hill CDA which has given a financial approval for the Halliwick Recreation Ground Sustainable Urban Drainage scheme (SuDS).
This is a flood alleviation scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to the properties and infrastructure in the area of Muswell Hill catchment within Barnet. It will also help to tackle the impacts of Climate Change by building a unique sustainable urban drainage scheme in the borough and beyond.
The scheme aims to build a flood storage basin which will store surface water runoff during heavy rain, in the north-eastern corner of the Halliwick Recreational ground.
The scheme will provide environmental, amenity benefits for the local residents and biodiversity and habitat enhancements. The flood storage basin will also provide water quality benefits by treating the storm water runoff from the highways.
The SuDS scheme at Halliwick recreation Ground is now under construction and is expected to finish by February 2024.
Decoy Brook Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
A Detailed Options appraisal study has been completed.
We are now consulting with City of London as landowner to see if we can implement a proposed natural flood management option in Hampstead Heat ahead of progress to the Outline Business Case to the Environment Agency.
Mill Hill Circus Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
A Detailed Options appraisal study has been completed.
As of January 2024, the scheme is currently on hold due to one of the key proposed options being on private land. We are currently engaging with the land owner and once resolved, the scheme will be progressed to the Outline Business Case stage.
Childs Hill Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
A Detailed Options appraisal study has been completed and is being progressed to the Outline Business Case.
Friern Barnet Critical Drainage Area (CDA)
A Detailed Options appraisal study has been completed and is being progressed to the Outline Business Case. The Friary Park Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) is envisaged to go under construction in Spring/Summer 2024.
