Ivan’s Story
Ivan began his journey with the Shared Lives Service in Moray several years ago, where he had been diagnosed with dementia and frailty. Ivan’s diagnosis and symptoms also included macular degeneration, subsequent gradual loss of sight, and short-term memory loss.
Ivan admitted this was difficult time in his life because he was extremely frustrated with his symptoms. He had always been an active individual and missed the independence he used to enjoy. Ivan’s wife also found it very difficult to support him alongside looking after herself.
The couple was introduced to the Shared Lives scheme which provided support for both Ivan and his wife. At first Ivan was supported for two hours per week, and then, when he and his wife moved house, this increased to full days, and eventually overnight stays.
The support from Shared Lives means Ivan’s wife manages to have regular visits now to see family at home, and abroad. Both Ivan and his wife enjoy the reassurance that Ivan is cared for by his Shared Lives Carer, where he has a good time whilst he is away from the family home.
Ivan and his family have become a big part of the Shared Lives network in Moray.
When Ivan was asked about potentially using an alternative service over Shared Lives. Ivan did not relish the idea of using a more traditional option like using a Day Support service. He was quoted saying "Oh no! it does me good to get outside, even though I can't be bothered sometimes!"
Shared Lives provides choice to the individual with care needs. Individuals with care needs can do things on their own, enjoy activities with their Shared Lives Carer, and live a good quality of life within a natural home environment.
Shared Lives provides the family carers with respite options and opportunities to take trips, visit friends, and family without worrying for their individual’s safety and needs, they know they are being looked after.
